Said he had a job for me
So he took me to the river
Pushed me in
And rubbed his belly
Plucked my eyebrows
And pasted tiny gold stars
Over my head
Then the man from Martian Metals
Made me a key out of lead.
“What’s this for?”
“It’s for a door—
When love’s gone
That’s where it goes.
Don’t you want to know?”
I climbed up the stairway
Made of autumn leaves
And notes goodbye
I put the key in the keyhole
Tried to turn it
I tried and tried
The key broke
And I fell backwards
Down the stairway
To the ground
As I lay there
Feeling stupid
I heard a tiny little…
I went back to Martian Metals
With the half-key
In my hand
I laid it down
On the front desk
They said “thank you! come again!”
I went out
Into the street
The street was just the same
I looked back at Martian Metals
They had changed their name.
